Entertaiment is a broad term that encompasses an enormous variety of activities. It can be used to refer to anything from a single individual choosing from an extensive selection of pre-recorded entertainment; to a banquet or party with appropriate music and dance; to a theatrical performance adapted for thousands. It can also be applied to something as serious as a ceremony, celebration, religious festival or satire.
The word derives from the Medieval Latin inter tenere, which combines the prefix intra meaning “inside” and the suffix tenere, a contraction of the Indo-European root ten, meaning to stretch or elongate. The etymology of the English word entertainment is an interesting one, and is perhaps indicative of the way in which we use the term today.
