Benz

Benz & Cie Automobiles was a German automotive company founded by Carl Benz in 1883. Founded in Mannheim, the company expanded its manufacturing facilities to Gaggenau and Mannheim-Waldhof. In 1922, Motoren-Werke Mannheim AG was spun off and later became the world’s largest stationary engine manufacturer. In 1926, the company merged with Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft to form Daimler-Benz AG.

The first production-level Wankel engine was the 10A series, which featured two rotors and a displacement of 491 cc (30.0 cu in). The cylinders were offset by 17.5 mm. The rotors themselves were a combination of aluminium and carbon and were approximately 4.7 inches in diameter. Mazda adapted this engine to fit its RX-7 sports sedan. While the Wankel engine is notoriously inefficient in fuel consumption, Mazda was able to provide good power-to-weight ratios and a compact design.
